18-24 Princess Street, Manchester M1 4LY

Type of cuisine: International

Average price: £40.00

Best Newcomer at the 2004 Manchester Food and Drink Festival awards, Obsidian has cemented its reputation since then as one of Manchester's premier restaurants

After an extensive refurbishment Obsidian is now proud to be one of the most lavish and chic restaurants in Manchester, serving delectable dishes and creative cocktails. Obsidian is located on Princess Street based directly underneath Arora hotel, a short walk away from Deansgate. As you enter, a discreet staircase now leads to two separate rooms, one for the more discerning diner and the other leads to the vibrant bar area. The newly revamped restaurant area now has cream booths and a mix of furnishings, which include leather Harvard style and dark velvet seating. The food at Obsidian continues to be looked after by Bryn Evans whose dishes are just as attractive to look at as they are to taste. Having worked for a string of reputable and award winning hotels and restaurants including; the prestigious Michelin awarded restaurant The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel and also the critically acclaimed Juniper restaurant, Bryn’s talent and experience will inevitably take Obsidian to the highest level in fine dining. Dishes on the autumn menu consist of the starters which include Loch Tarbert hand dived scallops with intense juniper and beetroot vinaigrette, and the autumnal roasted quail with pickled damsons, foie gras roulade and tomato jelly. The main dishes include roasted monkfish with chorizo foam and oil, courgette and smoked chestnut as well as roasted local chicken breast with consommé, corn and black trumpets. Not forgetting the mouth watering desserts which include cocao barry chocolate soufflé with Tahitian vanilla ice cream or blackberry cream with apple pastry, honey and organic cider. With the turn of each season Bryn and his team put together a faultless menu, attention to detail being paramount whilst still retaining the passion and enthusiasm which ultimately results in food that is sumptuous and sensational on all levels. Whether you are after an uber sexy place to have a stylish soirée or an intimate and discreet moment with a loved one or even an impressive dinner with clients, Obsidian Restaurant and bar is the only place to choose in Manchester.

Having been recommended Obsidian by a friend my wife and I visisted on a saturday evening and were not disappointed. The food was exceptional, and was delivered with efficient, friendly service. There is a cocktail bar accompanying the restaurant which is also superb with very knowledgeable staff. Overall a thouroughly enjoyable occassion in a great restaurant that I fully recommend myself now.
