Nestled in the heart of Brighton’s historic and hip Lanes is the fantastic vegetarian restaurant Food for Friends, an institution in Brighton having been open for over 28 years. Unlike many vegetarian eateries, Food for Friends is a stylish and sophisticated restaurant where 70 % of their customers are not even vegetarian, meaning that the food speaks for itself. Set over 3 shop fronts, Food for Friends offers different dining areas and an interior of simple, modern and minimalist design. Overlooking the hustle and bustle of Brighton’s Lanes diners can enjoy an eclectic vegetarian menu which is inspired by the flavours and recipes of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa. Food for Friends believes strongly in supporting local suppliers and use the finest and freshest ingredients available. The menus change according to the seasons with Spring highlights including a deliciously mouth-watering fresh papaya salad with avocado and cucumber topped with shredded carrot and spring onions and served with a chilli, lime and cashew nut dressing for starter followed by mains like Portobello mushroom stuffed with feta, sun dried tomatoes and pine nuts with sweet potato wedges, fine beans and a pesto sauce topped with crème fraiche or sweet potato and coconut curry. The wine list is purely organic, the coffee is fairtrade and the afternoon teas are divine. Food for Friends brings the vegetarian restaurant bang up to date and makes vegetarian food a thoroughly attractive proposition.

Getting friends to accompany you to a vegetarian restaurant can be a hard task indeed! Having finally persuaded a group of six (myself the only vegetarian) to try out Food for Friends we were all truly captivated by the whole experience, both culinary and socially. The sweet potato and coconut curry went down really well as did the mushroom rosti. A memorable dining experience from start to finish and a few idealogies about vegetarianism may well have been transformed!
